Halloween is the time of ghastly ghouls, scary monsters and just plain taking advantage of the opportunity to meet some friends to dress up and have some fun. Finding the right costume and decorations is always a challenge, so a few classic horror films will give you some great new ideas. Even if you already have a great costume, Halloween is just not right without watching a good creepy horror movie or two. Don’t worry if you can’t catch the late late show, because there are some great horror movies in the public domain that you can watch online for free.
Horror movies cover a wide range of genres, there are monster flicks, vampire movies, thrillers, sci-fi movies and zombie movies. Monster flicks include werewolves and all kinds of monsters and other creatures, zombies are the living dead, and thrillers and sci-fi movies usually feature some sorts of aliens or other nightmarish creatures with great visual aspects. If you’re planning on decorating your house, then watching a thriller is a great idea, as these movies often take place in Haunted Houses or Old mansions. What’s great is that every movies has its own idea of what makes a great zombie, vampire or Frankenstein. So Horror movies are a treasure trove of great ideas. Without further ado, here are the top public domain Halloween Horror movies that you can watch online for free.
The House on Haunted Hill – Vincent Price stars in this creepy Haunted House movie about a group of strangers whom he invites to spend the night in a mansion where a number of murders have occurred. He offers $10,000 to anyone who can stay in the house for a whole night. A great movie to watch for haunted house ideas because skeletons, murdered people and other scary haunted house standards are popping up all during the film.
Bloody Pit of Horror – A campy Horror film about a photographer and a group of models who go to an old castle for a photo shoot. But the castle is now the home of a madman called the Crimson Executioner who lives only to kill and torture. The models begin to disappear and fall prey to him one by one. Another movie that is chock full of haunted house ideas. The bedrooms and the torture chamber are an endless source of good ideas for halloween decorations. And if you want to dress up as a truly unique character that looks scary, cool and original, you’ll have to be the Crimson Executioner!
Lady Frankenstein – After Dr. Frankenstein is killed by a monster that he created, his attractive daughter continues his experiments. Meanwhile, the Frankenstein monster goes on a killing spree in search of revenge. A respectable Frankenstein movie with good action and a farely good depiction of Frankenstein. Fashion plates will want to take a good look at Lady Frankenstein and the Victorian gowns which she wears in various states of undress.
Satanic Rites of Dracula – Swingin’ London 1973. A plague of vampires is on the loose plotting to exterminate humanity. Suspense, action and blood, along with star actors Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing make for solid Halloween entertainment. It’s not hard to look like a basic vampire, but watching this horror movie will give you some ideas on dressing up like a murder victim or a vampire’s last midnight snack, and let you add some refinements to any vampire costume.
Dementia 13 – After the accidental death of her husband, a young woman goes to Ireland and visits his family plotting to get a share of her dead husband’s inheritance. An axe murderer interferes with her plans. A classic horror flick directed by Francis Ford Coppola. This is an out and out thriller with lots of great outdoor scenes. If you aren’t planning on dressing up and just want to go out in street wear, this movie is a sure fire way to find some basic accessories that you can pick up just about anywhere that will have people gushing with praise about your original Halloween ideas.
Last Man on Earth – Vincent Price (the voice of the narrator in Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video) stars as Robert Morgan in this apocalyptic old horror film set in the aftermath of a plague. The survivors are vampire-like zombies who avoid the sun. Morgan is immune to the plague and fights the zombies for survival. The living dead fill this movie, but Robert Morgan looks like your classic vampire killer, carrying around a stock of sharpened wooden stakes. You could do a lot worse the dressing up like him.
Night of the Living Dead – This classic Zombie flick from George Romero is one of the most famous horror movies of all time. A diverse group of people take refuge in a deserted farmhouse after the dead begin to come back to life. Essential Halloween viewing! If you want to dress up like a zombie, there are dozens to see in this flick!
Be sure to catch at least a few of these Halloween horror movies in the days leading up to Halloween so you can get some new ideas for some great creepy Halloween costumes and Halloween decorations. Then once you’ve been out shopping or pulled some old stuff out of the bottom of your drawers and the back of your closet when the big night comes, you can sit back a few friends and watch your favorite, preferably by pumpkin light!
